Workout Plans for Men (and How to Stick to One!)

If you’ve ever started a workout program and completely lost interest or motivation, I’m with you. I’ve been there.

In my early days I even thought to myself, “Why do I keep spending money on these courses and not following through? Am I just lazy?”

I also know how it feels to want to make a change, but also be wary of purchasing any course now, out of fear that you won’t be motivated to follow through and get results!

But let me tell you: not every workout program you do is doomed to failure. There are many reasons why you’re probably not following through on them, and here I address several BIG one’s below you may not be aware of. I’ll also go through crucial practices to embrace to help you complete a course and actually get results.

How to Actually Stick to Your Workout Plan

1. Focus on the Morning

I know the late-sleepers are groaning at this, but hear me out: part of the reason workouts never get done is because we leave them for the afternoon or evening. Then, when the time comes to hit the gym or work out at home, something life or career-related pops up and stops us from doing it. Either that, or we conclude we’re just too tired and “will definitely start tomorrow.”

I know I don’t have to say too much about this loop, because most of us have been there (myself included)!

This is why the solution is almost always to get your workouts done in the morning. By doing this, you finish your workout before anything else can interfere, and you free up your mind to focus on other things during the day. And trust me, not having that nagging feeling that you aren’t getting to your goals throughout the day is beyond freeing!

So set the alarm (getting quality sleep will help you get up, so if you’re having a hard time, check out this piece) and let’s go!

2. Don’t Follow the Crowd (especially if you’re uninspired by it!)

Many people tend to purchase certain workout programs just because “everyone else is doing/liking it” or “everyone else” is getting results from it. However, this is a detrimental strategy, simply because you haven’t discerned whether YOU actually enjoy the type of or style workouts done in the program!

One of the reasons I developed my own “rapid-fire” method of movement is because I don’t really enjoy the “standard bodybuilder” regime of lifting weights repetitively (no judgement, it’s just not for me personally!). When I tried to fit myself into that style of training, I wasn’t motivated or inspired, which lead to skipping workouts.

On the flip side however, I only started getting major results when I began listening to my own intuition regarding training! Now, I love working out, because it fits who I am, includes the type of movements I like to do, and is challenging enough to keep me coming back for more.

My advice? Choose a workout plan that includes the style of training YOU like or are intrigued by, not just what the other guy is doing. Most programs include free trials (like the FREE 14-Day Trial of my MV Fit App subscription) and/or free workouts, so you can see if you actually enjoy what you’re doing before you buy.

3. Set Inspirational Reminders

Along with getting your workouts done in the morning, it’s helpful to set reminders for yourself – not only as alerts for when to accomplish your program’s tasks – but also inspirational reminders of WHY you’re doing what you’re doing!

I like to set reminders on my phone that don’t just say: “It’s time to work out. Get up.” (not fun, haha) but begin with an inspirational quote such as, “I already know what giving up feels like. I want to see what happens when I don’t.

4. Invest in the Right Tools

Having the right tools is crucial for sticking to any regime, and by “tools,” I don’t just mean equipment.

I’m talking about tools that integrate with out modern lifestyles, like scheduling apps and a way to keep your workout videos in sequence and with you at all times.

This is truly why I created my MV Fit App subscription – because every one of my workout programs is literally at your fingertips, and everything you need for organization is IN the app. It allows you to schedule your workouts, create your own playlist of workout/movement videos, access my playlist to easily follow, screencast onto other devices like your TV, the ability to view workouts without WiFi, and, well, I could go on, but you get the gist!

When everything is in one place to keep you on track, you have almost zero excuses to not finish your plan and get results!

A few other tips to stick to your plan include:

• Having a designated space to work out in if you’re working out at home (set up your equipment there)
• If you “don’t feel like working out” try a few stretches alongside some yoga poses, then decide if you still don’t have the energy
• Turn off notifications from text and email on your phone during your designated workout times.
• Only keep clean food in the house, and eat after your morning workout (not before)
• Place inspirational photos on your desktop and phone backgrounds

As you can see, a lot of these tips involve finding ways to keep you in a motivated mindset. After all, mindset is literally everything when it comes to accomplishment.
